The Mentalist Interview!

With the shocking November death of CBI Agent Bosco (Terry Kinney) and the subsequent resignation of Agt. Virgil Minelli (Gregory Itzin),The Mentalist was left with a major position to be filled. The job’s now taken: Meet new series regular Aunjanue Ellis, who joins the CBS crime drama this spring. In the final six episodes, the True Blood alum plays Agent Hightower, a woman with a husband, kids and secrets that won’t be revealed until next season.

Hightower’s name fits her persona. “She has almost a military style of command, but with surprising subtlety in her tactical behavior,” says creator Bruno Heller. “She comes in with the attitude that Minelli let far too much slide, so we wanted someone very tough who could really stand up to Patrick Jane.”

Just one problem: The actress confesses, “I’ve had a crush on Simon for a couple years. He’s dashing, charming, and it doesn’t hurt that he has a great smile and hair. I’m going to have to avoid looking him in the eye.”

Word is Gregory wasn’t thrilled about being replaced and, after shooting his final scenes, took off without saying goodbye. But Heller calls Gregory, who’s returning to 24 as ex–President Logan, “a brilliant actor who did wonderful things for us…. We all have to move on, which is the hardest thing to do.” Heller, who still has plans for Minelli if Gregory’s game to return, says, “We definitely haven’t seen the last of this old cop.” Or killer Red John, by the way, whom Heller says will “rear his ugly head toward the end of our season.” Watch out, Hightower!
